Power is a unique word. It conjures up multiple images in our minds. She’s got the power. He’s really powerful. But what do those statements really mean?
Power is an essential, yet often overlooked and neglected aspect of training. It’s not only critical for peak performance in almost every sport, it’s actually necessary for optimal longevity. So much of the current discussion regarding healthspan focuses upon resistance training for strength and muscle mass, and aerobic training for endurance and VO2 max. Those are incredibly important foundational elements, but alone they are inadequate for those who seek the highest outcomes. Said differently, strength and cardio training are good — really good — they just aren’t quite good enough when you want to achieve your best results. That’s when you need power. And here’s how to train for it. Safely. Effectively.
We begin every month in our Training Tribe community with a discussion on the pertinent items in our current training block. In this conversation, we define power and describe how we are using it in our weekly workouts. Tribe membership is exclusively available for subscribers in The Lifetime Athlete App.
