Defining the ATHLETISPAN

These days, there are a number of terms which are frequently used to describe our pursuit of longevity and peak performance. The manner in which we frame that which we do…can have a powerful impact on our mindsets as well as our outcomes.

Here’s a topic that we discuss quite often in The Lifetime Athlete App. And that’s the ATHLETISPAN. It’s based on the concept of optimized aging and it represents a natural progression from lifespan…to healthspan…to fitspan…and ultimately to…ATHLETISPAN.

Lifespan is exactly what it sounds like. It’s our length of life. How long will you live? This is generally determined by a combination of genetics, lifestyle habits, and good fortune. It’s entirely reasonable that you aspire to live a long life which exceeds the norms.

Healthspan is the buzzword these days. It’s all the rage. Now we’re looking at the portion, hopefully nearly the entirety, of your lifespan in which you are truly healthy…free from disease and disability. It’s here that our practices can have profound impacts on preventing the decline of health in our later decades. You dial in the 5 components of Lifelong Health. Food, Movement, Sleep, Ergonomics, and Mindset…to maximize your healthspan.

Now we kick it up a notch, and that’s with Fitspan. Here, you’re healthy and feeling not just good…but great. You’re exercising to build and maintain life-enhancing muscle, bone density, and aerobic capacity which supports your work and life activities at a high level. This is your insurance policy for functional independence.

But ultimately, you can achieve the ATHLETISPAN, in which you express and preserve the natural athletic qualities of the human organism…representing your peak potential. Not only to perform well in sports and recreational activities, but to participate fully in all of LIFE. Community, career, relationships…having the energy, focus, and vitality to contribute just as much as you accomplish. You are a comprehensively capable BEAST, whose strength, speed, power, agility, and endurance allows you to live life with practically no limits. An athletically aging human is robust, resilient, versatile, and durable. This is the icing on the cake of Training for LIFE and it’s approachable for each of us. It’s what we all deserve and what we all should be striving for.

Living the ATHLETISPAN is neither an elite nor exclusive process. It’s an inclusive community in which we support each other to discover, develop, and embrace the athlete that resides within every single one of us.
